Secret Tracking added to your print outs?

A little about me:

I have been on Steemit for a little under a month and I haven't used the introduce yourself tag to let others know who I am.

I am into all things tech related, from crypto currencies to retro gaming.

Feel free to follow if you like the below post.

Secret Tracking added to your print outs?

It has recently come to light that many of the major printer manufacturers have been secretly adding a form of steganography to your print outs.

Steganography is the art of hiding data within other data.

The information provided includes the time and date the document was printed and the serial number of the printer.

Image from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printer_steganography

These yellow dots which have been magnified 60 times, were found on a Xerox printout

The below image shows the hidden yellow dots which are visible when illuminated under blue light.

These dots are then plotted against a grid which will reveal the hidden data (time, date and serial number of printer)

This technology has come back into the public eye after the NSA made public charges against a former employee for apparently leaking confidential documents.

It is believed by examining these leaked documents they could see exactly when and where they were printed and from what printer.

Doe's anyone see an issue with this? Should printer manufacturers make this information more widely known to it's users?

It seems nothing is untraceable in this modern world even when printed out.

If you think you are hiding your digital footprint by making a hard copy, then think again as it seems not even the physical world is safe.

Big brother is always watching 👀

Bringing the hard hitting knowledge out of the gate. I appreciate you and want to learn more about retro gaming. Are we talking Dig Dug era or something else? Have a great day.

Thanks for the comment. Retro games from the days of the Amiga and Commodore 64 and everything after that.

If you are interested I have just wrote the following on the Commodore 64:

https://steemit.com/gaming/@somecoolname/monday-memories-2-the-commodore-64

checking out the article now.

Interesting, so that is how it is done. I tend to agree that the feature should be more widely advertised, perhaps a disclaimer of some kind near the keypad would be appropriate.

That being said, I was aware that the "feature" existed. It was a Canon copier salesman in Ireland over 10 years ago that told me. He was bragging that they had to add the feature because the copier was so good it could make a very convincing copy of a bank note.

I didn't realise it had been on there as long as 10 years. Interesting to know.

The key is being aware. Used printers are a dime a dozen so either pick one up on the curb, at a yard sale or maybe pay cash for a new one if you really don't want what you print to be traceable back to you.

Theres not much I print out these days and what I do print I doubt anyone would be interested in. Mainly pictures for my daughter to colour in 😂. Like you say though, just being aware it is there is good enough.

I wrote the article because it fascinates me the levels of monitoring that go on on a daily basis which we all know about, but the fact this is physical and not in cyberspace made it interesting. Thanks for the comment.

Interesting info. Welcome to steemit.

Thanks. Followed you.

@somecoolname Wishing you a joyful and rewarding experience with steemit.com
I also enjoy retrogames (I was a computer gamer in the 80's) LOL 😃

Have you researched the banking cartel's blockchain (FINTECH) implementation plans?
If not please do - no need for anyone to remain blind to their digital economy (cashless society) globalization plans.

Thanks for the welcome. I already Followed you 😃😃

@somecoolname Ha-ha, yes, I realised we chatted after I replied - this old man, has difficulty recalling the many strange usernames on steemit.
But I don't recall us ever discussing retrogames? I mentioned a old favorite game of mine to a steemian, but I don't think it was you.

No we haven't spoken about retro games before. A few of my other posts are about retro games on the Amiga 500.

@somecoolname Ha-ha I remember a buddy bought the amiga "for his son" and soon after I built my first PC with DOS and later upgraded to DRDOS 😃
One of my favorite games was STAR FLIGHT

DOS haha, how far we've come since those days. I haven't heard of STAR FLIGHT but I'll check it out.

If your interested in old school gaming you might like my article on the Amiga.

Yeah , and floppy disks!
https://www.gog.com/ makes retro games less painful to port over to current computers. But maybe you run a emulator and can simply download free copies of abandonware.
