Two Teenage Players From Akwa Ibom Qualify For Winifred Awosika National U-11 Scrabble Champions

Two teenage players of scrabble game from the Orange State have qualified for the final round of Winifred Awosika National U-11 Scrabble championship for schools.

The two male teenage players are,Abasido Bassey and Prestige Mfoniso, and they are expected to play in the final round, which will commence on Friday, June 1st and ends on Sunday, June 3rd,2018 in Lagos.

Speaking in an interview with Orange Sports,the state scrabble coach, Mr Moses Peter, who is also the current world number two Scrabble player in the world said, the players were discovered from the just concluded 2nd Akwa Ibom Youth Sports Festival,added that a total of five players were taken to the South South elimination competition, which was held in Edo state, as two of them finally made it to the final round in Lagos.

Mr.Peter,disclosed that the pupils were picked from different primary and nursery schools in the state, which include,Ritman schools, Rayfield, Infant Jesus, Oron and ALSCON Staff schools, Ikot Abasi.

He used the opportunity to thanked the parents f the players, who were so cooperative in releasing their children for training directly from their homes.

 "I have to commend the parents of these kids for standing by me,the children were always coming down to training right from their different homes. This is because for the past months now,the state scrabble association do not have their permanent training place,where all the state scrabble players could be gathered and practice their games"

Meanwhile, the chief coach ,Mr Moses Peter, was defeated by new world number one scrabble player, Aksay Bandhakah of Bahrain, last December in Kenya to become the world number one scrabble player.

According to him,67 countries participated in the world championship, as Nigeria was the only country that had four players in the first ten players category at the event.

With this feat,the country was awarded with a trophy as the best world scrabble playing nation in the world.
