200 Followers! What a Platform-My plans for a quirky med student blog continue

So I introduced myself to Steemit for the first time a couple months ago, and since then I've inched closer to the beginning of medical school. I'm stoked to have just reached 200 followers just a couple weeks short of school starting!

For the most-to-all of you that haven't seen my posts yet, my name's Warren and I'm a 25 year-old who's here to blog about experiences at a school of osteopathic medicine in the Bay Area. I'm the third of four brothers and I live in Northern California as of a week. My mom, grandmother, and little brother live on Kauai, and my other two brothers live in San Diego and Berlin, Germany. I graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa 3 years ago majoring in Microbiology. This was the day I graduated.

Since then have worked as medical scribe (taking medical notes for doctors). I've beed dating my girlfriend Sarah for 3 years and we're about to face a hurdle with long-distance.

My final moments with Sarah were had a couple days ago. We'll reunite soon enough, but it was disconcerting to see our apartment reduced to a heap of luggage.

She's staying in Southern California to go into her 2L year of law school. I've now reached my new destination of Benicia, California, just northeast of San Francisco. She's moving in with a first year girl from New Jersey who looks straight out of a sorority and ready to hit a wine bar with Sarah whenever possible. She's very attractive and I'm sure she'll get along fine with Sarah, which is great because she needs to blow off steam. At the same time, I'm sure those two will be fending off guys left and right at the bars.

I bought a blood pressure cuff tonight from a medical student who is in the middle of his rotations. It's helpful to get your foot in the door with people who are further along in the process. He gave me a few tips during the transaction: To try new methods of studying until one works, and then stick to it, to "play the game" as in follow the rules and guidelines set by the school, to study for the USMLE board exams because that includes the information in the D.O. boards. He seemed very put-together and level-headed. Had to try the cuff out, though it's a little tight on me cause it's a pediatrics cuff.....😟

I've set up a new room in a new home. I feel very fortunate to have found a host who has an awesome house and really cares about her tenants. Her house is on a hilltop and has a scenic view of an offshoot of the bay, and at nights I can relax in a hot tub watching cargo ships roll by.

The woman renting out to me lives here as well, and she teaches young adults with crime records skills to help integrate into society. She is an avid mountain biker, hiker, and evidently has recently gotten into using electric bicycles. All interactions so far point to her being a very hospitable host: she picked like 25 ripe and juicy summer peaches from a neighbor's tree today and baked a delectable peach pie, and offered me and the other tenants a slice with a couple scoops of Vanilla Bean Scream. What a lady.

She has a 7-year-old border collie named Kiwi, a German Shepherd Luke, and a nameless Calico Cat with a penchant for bringing in dead animal presents. She also has a gopher problem outside! I guess that's common around here? Check out these pups!

Still a couple weeks to go before an all-out medical blitz.

So I've been trying to knock some activities off the ol' bucket list. Went to see some Redwoods at Muir Woods yesterday--Biggest trees I ever did see. Fat trunks that just extend upward till you can't see any further. I went with a friend of mine named Justice, yes, his real name (and guess what profession he's in---LAW!)

Later on, went to Ocean Beach in San Francisco for a bonfire. Was an absolutely gorgeous night. Big ships rolling by, around 65-70 degrees, wine, brats over the bonfire, couldn't ask for much more.

We first hung out by the ocean with some beers. I didn't realize this, but it's actually legal to drink in public parks in San Francisco, including a bunch of beaches. Glass bottles may be a stretch, but still, a very European move by San Fran. And it was much appreciated by the crew I was with. Anyhow I'm still getting settled in here, but I can tell I am very lucky to be in Northern Cali. It's amazing up here so far.

Hope you Steemians continue to follow along with my journey when you can!

Peace and Love,

Steemmate
