2017 was truly the year of IT. Fueled in part by audience nostalgia for the 1990 TV movie and leading the pack in what would become the biggest year for horror movies ever, the film based on Stephen King’s novel about a killer clown named Pennywise terrorizing children in the town of Derry, Maine was a massive success by every measure. Even King himself was unprepared for how good IT was.

By the time IT was done thrilling and scaring audiences, it claimed the titles of highest-grossing Stephen King movie and highest-grossing R-rated horror movie of all time. Thankfully, the young cast of IT won’t be left out of the upcoming Chapter 2, which will feature the Loser’s Club as present day adults. But in a year of huge and surprising movie successes, nothing simultaneously scared and excited fans quite like IT.
