A good front end is Busy.org. That has some features not on Steemit.com. Most people use both.
A good way to ignore the promotion and spam is to check out @trufflepig. It's a bot that generates a trending page without paid promotion or circular upvoting.
Another helpful tool for people new on the platform to have their content seen is by other new posters is Steemengine. Seems better than bid bots. (My referral if you want to use that.) Basically another trending page for new users.
Careful with some of the links in comments. There's been a lot of phishing spam lately.
