Carbonated drinks (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite etc) can be used as a fire extinguisher. It can extinguish fires by cooling and smothering both phenomenon, as it is above 90 % aqua diluted drink with dissolved carbon dioxide (Water content of full calorie soft drink is 90 %, and a diet soft drink is 99 %).

Water and Carbon dioxide both serve as good extinguishers.

Carbonated drink is best on Class A fires (fires involving ordinary solid combustibles like wood, paper, cloth, thermoset plastics, rubber, cotton, wool, etc).

It is dangerous on Class B & E fires (liquid flammables and Electrical fires respectively). As flammable liquid fires contain calorific values more than the dissociation temperature of water causing explosion. On electrical fires Carbonated drink can be a good electrolyte to conduct electricity and cause electric shocks. Do not try it on Kitchen Fires (Class F: involving Oil & Ghee, Cooking Fats.)

Carbonated drink can also be used as an extinguisher for Class C fires (i.e. fires involving flammable gases) but not as much effective as on Class A fires because of highest Brownian motion and diffusibility factor of gases.

Never forget to shake it well before use because shaking liberates the dissolved Carbon Dioxide that serves as an expelling agent as well as an extinguishing agent by smothering (Deoxidizing) fires. CO2 also expels out water/liquid content in mist form to extinguish fire by cooling. Without shaking Carbonated drink, you cannot achieve better results.

Note: Do not try it indoor to put out a small fire, you can drill it outdoor. Further, remember all portable extinguishers (Not large extinguisher mounted on trolley) are designed to put out a small fire equal to the size of a domestic garbage/dust bin. Never try extinguishers on large size files. . drinks (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite etc
