6 years ago, I quit my day job. Today, I create social impact campaigns with the help of 300,000 fans worldwide.

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago  (edited)

I graduated from Mining Engineering with the conviction that it was NOT what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Unfortunately, I wasn't good at much else so the (asian) parental units convinced me that the best course of action was to go ahead, and earn some money which I begrudgingly did. This was 2008.

Somewhere along the way, I discovered photography - quit my job - travelled the world - participated in a couple global marketing campaigns - only to realize that just making money wasn't as fulfilling as I thought it would be.

I wanted to do something that would help make the world a better place, not just cash out on it.

Fast forward 18 months of unpaid work - I finally created a campaign that finally reflected what I hoped to do with my career: To put my art in the service of something that actually mattered.

What has always surprised me within my projects was not the final result, as much as the support of complete strangers coming together. For my mermaid project, over 50 volunteers came together to clean other people's trash, sorting, cleaning, de-labeling thousands of bottles. Without them, there would be no project. We tied a model underwater while waiting for sharks to swim by When I tied a model underwater for shark conservation, divers, models, scientists, videographer and even the resorts all came together to support the initiative. Not for any commercial gain, but because it was the opportunity to be a part of something greater. When I made a video for a complete stranger, the father of a little girl hoping for a viral video to save his little girl from a terminal degenerative brain disease, the community once again rallied and came together.

Their contributions, likes and shares helped it build enough momentum to be the top GoFundMe campaign for over two years, raising a million dollars in just a month.

Time and time again, regardless of the projects I've worked on - the success or failure has come down to one thing: Community.

The problem though, is that despite the 3000% growth that I've experienced since quitting my day job - the social kings of Facebook, Instagram and Youtube that are supposed to help us BUILD community have split us apart with algorithms, sponsored posts and prank videos.

Even worst, content creators now need to PAY to have their content seen by the following they spent sleepless nights tireless creating for.

Bullshit!

What used to be an opportunity to connect with the world has transformed into a sea of competition just to have the privilege of being an influencer for a few measly dollars.

/Rant. Over.

Looking at Steem, there seems to be a whole new world of possibilities. The chance for the community to support the continued creation of projects that they enjoy, simply by interacting the content seems a little too good to be true. Yet there are clearly those successfully doing it: @velimir, @helene, @art-mess to name a few.

I'm not sure what the future holds but I'm excited to give this a shot. Thank you guys so much for reading. I look forward to hearing more from you!

Hey @theaustrianguy ! Thanks so much for taking the time to drop in! I was trying to find ways to dual stream from FB to dTube but wasn't able to quite figure it out. I hear that you guys only like original content though so what do you recommend?

When I need to stream to two locations I use a second computer to encode second stream. Video capture cards for gamers work really well. I use a Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro and OBS to stream to second source.

well done...amazing!!!

Wow, amazing to see a photography big gun on here, I'm delighted! This introduction resonates with me a lot, I'm a civil engineering grad also pushed into an industry I have no desire to be in, by parents. And with a dream to make a career out of photography. Would love to be a part of your future critiques.

Solid dude! Thanks so much for the re-steem. I would love to hear more about your experience here on Steem and how you built up to 51 reputation. How long did it take you? How has the experience be? Did you have to use bots? Do you really need to post 5x a day?

Come be a part of tonight's facebook live <3 I'll check out your feed now!

Wow I didn't really notice the 51 - I'm on here since July but only really started being a daily visitor in the last 3 weeks or so. AFAIK each rep level is harder than the last, but writing content, upvoting, and commenting seem to be the way to go. Personally I've occasionally used upvote bots but not often. Some folk swear by them. As for 5x a day! Nah man, I'd lose the will to live if I sat at a computer that long lol :D

What's the principal with the upvote bots?

Sorry man, had to have some sleeps there :) The whole bot thing is a deep rabbit hole. Here's a link to an article I found very helpful, might be useful for you: https://steemit.com/steemit/@adonisabril/your-first-month-on-steemit-22-tips-to-help-you-succeed

Really amazing to see your work. I think that you are going to like it here on Steemit. It's attracting more and more people that are fed up with the ridiculousness of facebook, instagram and other social media. I'm really glad I found your blog, and I look forward to seeing more of your work. Welcome to Steemit!

@vonwong
Welcome to @steemit, may you inspire and be inspired.

stay blessed...

Appreciate the welcome buddy. If you have any tips or tricks, I'd love to see them.

@vonwong
@steemit
@originalworks
Your work is amazing, am sure you don't need tips from me, you will do great. I read a post a long time ago with regards to improving visibility and also creating content that drives people to your page. May or may not be applicable to you, since I think your work and post will just bring followers organically. either way here it is, this is one of the steemians I find always has one interested. but , as I said very different content, but I guess the basics would work the same:

Read this post written by @sweetsssj for comprehensive tips on improving your posts. This I think is one of the best posts to for great tips.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@sweetsssj/sweetsssj-s-tips-to-successful-lifestyle-blogging-on-steemit

solid buddy! I'll check it out! I've read a lot of things about using bots and chat groups but I'm hoping to develop it a little differently, from the ground up. Not sure if that's naive or intelligent haha.

@ecotrain !

Does tagging someone send them a notification?

This is incredible. You are incredible! Very inspirational thank you for sharing! Serously awesome pictures.

Thanks Austin ! Appreciate you taking the time to write in!

I'm following your work for a couple of years already. Because of you I found Steemit so thanks for the great inspiration and all the great info that you provide. P.S Missing those BTS :D

Hey Raoul! So great to see that you followed me over from another platform. Was it facebook, instagram or telegram?

Tonight I'm hosting a FB live chronicling the journey to build a STEEM presence!

I got here from Facebook. But I admit on being a little stalker and following you on Instagram as well :D

Solid buddy! Come be a part of the FB live tonight!

Thanks for the invite! I'll be there :)

Welcome to steemit.

I think you will do great in here!

Fingers crossed! Would love any tips if you have any!

I think you have probably already read about this but gonna say it anyways, just in case.

You should learn which passwords to use and when, also how to secure them as much as possible.

I think that's really important if you're planning to stay on steemit for a long time ^^

Wait, passwords? I just have the super crazy long one they give you when you log in....

Ooh, there are like 5 big long passwords.

You can read about the passwords here:
https://steemit.com/steem/@mooncryption/steem-keys-and-passwords-full-guide

oh epic, let me check that shit out!

I really enjoyed this post. Awesome pictures. Do me a favor, keep up the good work! you got yourself a new follower :)
EDIT: After watching that video I feel guilty for using my 2cnd hydracy waterbottle

It's been a few years - hoping to have the discipline to keep up the content here on STEEM.

Hi Ben, I've been following you and your work since the mermaid project. Keep up the good work! Keep inspiring for a better world! 😃

hey @versstyle, glad you like my work! If you liked the mermaid one I have a few more coming up I think you'll LOVE! Hopefully they come out in the next few months :)

They take so much work to create.

I wrote mermaid by mistake. I meant the shark Shepard. Hahaa. Always eagerly waiting for your next project.

Oh! I'm also trying to do a new underwater project... but it takes quite a little bit of time to prepare. We're hoping for some coral bleaching awareness projects.

Welcome to steemit. I've seen your video few years ago and I think it was in Facebook, but I could hardly remember now if I repost it. I never expected that I could encounter again the video here and it's even so surprising to see you here. I salute for your advocacy! Enjoy Steeming!

Thanks @puroypoi!! such a small world sometime. How has your time been on Steem? Any tips to get noticed by the dolphins and whales?

I really don't know, I just got started here a month ago, though I signed up july of last year. They say, one should make quality content post/s in order for dolphins and whales short notice you. But hey, you already got noticed my few minnows, an orca and several planktons, I think you are heading that way. ;)

hahaha. Lots of plankton - I tried migrating my community over so they're all starting brand new :) Let's see how this goes!

all i can say its thumbs up Ben 20180108_225840_HDR.jpg

would be happy to participate in a critique session

YEAH BUDDY! Love that these Von Wong bracelets are lasting the test of time.

Tonight I'm gonna cover a bit of storytelling and how to create a compelling article, maybe something amazing to apply on your next STEEM post. I know that it's hard to get motivated on something brand new, but I've seen too many people actually succeed here to think that it could be totally worth it in the long run... especially if the value of STEEM goes up.

Beautiful story, I also quit my day job 10 years ago to become an artist and make a difference :)

That's awesome! Computer scientist serving you well now in Crypto though. I'm playing catchup!!

@vonwong a constant inspiration. The world needs more of you.

Hey @craigmacphee - welcome to the new platform and thank you for the compliments! I really think there's too much Von Wong hype ... I really have a lot of hit/miss projects, but always trying to up the game.

Welcome @vonwong! Great to see another great photographer on here! I'm sure your posts will inspire me to up my Steemit game as well!

Hey @seangold! Would love to hear more about your experiences, tips and tricks. Saw your last 3DR post take off - what did you do differently for it to work?

Hey @vonwong! As much as I'd like to say I know, truthfully, I don't. I think at this stage for me on here, anything like that is mostly luck, that the right person, or people came across it at the tight time. So while I try to learn more as well, I plan to just keep trying to post quality content, and put my faith in Steemit that if it is quality, it will come to the top! I'll be keeping an eye out for you in my feed, and keep doing amazing things!

Inspirational post. As always. I’ve been following you for many years, and it’s going to be fun to follow you here. Best of luck on this new platform 😃

Awesome! I'm hoping to do something I've never really tried to do before - participate a lot more in the interactive process of Q&A and community building. The idea that everyone can earn money by just improving is too interesting for me to pass on.

Love your work, love your attitude - pure inspiration! And, well, here I am, at Steem, after reading your facebook-post. Lets give it a try.

@lenab ! Thank you so much! I hope to see you on tonight's facebook live - we can exchange tips, tricks and feedback. It should be fun!

Your posts really do create hope and inspire. You might have opened another door for me here from Facebook to start my journey, I hope we will all explore this place together.

Ben, please keep doing what You love because we love what You do.

appreciated buddy!!! Yes, let's go on this journey together!

You always have been someone that I admire! I've seen how your work has evolved and I am so happy that you are using your creativity to make a difference! I also want to promote a conscious and sustainable lifestyle!
I am interested on helping out with your projects if ever you need help as well! :)

Hey @bylauragdiaz ! Nice to see you here! You need to change that avatar of yours :P

Where do you live?

It's official! Welcome to Steemit @vonwong! I'm sure you will do great here!

Thanks for the call and all the help buddy, let's see how the next few days come together!

Steemit is the right place for you! Your projects have been awe inspiring. I hope to see much more in the future here on Steemit. Upvoted, following and resteemed.

Thats amazing @cecicastor ! Thanks for sharing, upvoting and resteeming. If you have any tips on how to attract and build a following here would love to learn !

Engagement and building a rapport with folks here on steemit. Read lots of posts and comment. It takes time and effort to build a large following.

Roger that ! That was what I was planning on doing !

Thanks for bringing your photography here to share! Your work delivers a necessary message wrapped up in such a nice aesthetic.

I think many of us can relate to the dissonance between what we've been told we should do for material success and what we feel called to do instead. Props to you for following your heart in spite of all the challenges!

Hey @scottyeager ! It's a constant challenge but a fun journey, thanks for dropping in to say hi. How has your time on steem been so far? Any good tips to make it here?

Sure thing!

I've really enjoyed my time on Steemit. The conversation here is surprisingly civil, even around some of the heated political debates affecting what's going on with the platform and community. There are tons of little gems to discover from all over the world here, and the international inclusion is super cool.

As for tips, I actually did a post to record my initial experiences here and some lessons I learned along the way. You can check it out here: https://steemit.com/community/@scottyeager/how-to-be-a-minnow

Been following you on Facebook for a while and learned about steemit through you. Can't wait to see your next projects. Best of luck on steemit!

Hey @woodzi ! Thanks for following me over here. I'm hoping to build a community here, not just about me. That's what I think is really cool about this !

Welcome to Steemit! I look forward to reading your future content :)

Thanks @harryp !

Hello Ben, followed you over from Facebook. Keen on seeing what steemit can do for creatives. And I think you are the best candidate to find out. Thanks for sharing your journey, experience and great artistry. Btw I would also like to see the microfiber story land in industrial applications. How far is the status?

Hey @peterschmid - I'm planning to do an update with UPWORTHY soon. Basically we got responses from about 13 different companies that all said "it's not our problem" so still pushing but it's a lot of work.

Aah damn gonna miss the FB live event. Saw you join STEEMit, so figured I'd give it a try as well. Maybe I will shadow you and see how you build an audience, try some of the things out myself.

Just catch up on the LIVE's when you get a chance. I'll try my best to keep things interesting and also to post a daily STEEM profile

So exited to see you on steemit! I follow your work since few years ago and I have to say that you are a big reference for every single photographer, artist, and content creator.

Welcome!

No way buddy! Hope you managed to catch my Facebook LIVE, plan on spending a lot more time here.

I am glad I found your post, warm welcome on steemit :) I am looing forward to exchange further with you and maybe to cooperate a day with the Global School and your talent :) best from Vienna, Jean

This may seem like I'm talking to a veteran but... thank you for your service :)

It is incredible what you have done. I loved your campaign with the mermaids. Definitely I will follow you waiting for your new campaigns. I am an art addicted and I study all the social bottom-up processes. If you think that can be interesting for you check my profile

Hey buddy! Took a gander, love your story! Thanks for saying hello <3 Let's keep in touch!

Welcome to @steemit @vonwong !!! Happy to meet you here and impatient to know more about your new projects!

Thanks @Galamirissa, a little newbie here but hoping to discover more!

Welcome! It's not every day one of your idols joins Steemit. You'll be a huge asset to the whole STEEM community, and I know you're gonna do really well here for sure!

Hey @condra! Thanks for the welcome here, if you have any tips for a newbie please let me know. I'm hoping to build a side community focused on quality and less on regularity and bots, not sure if that's a good idea.

good post
Good success

You're an example for all creators and Storytellers!
By reading this article you gave me a lot of inspiration, and I couldn't agree more on Youtube, facebook, and other social media holding us back because of their greed for money, absolutely unfair!

Thank you!

Hey @bonaventurehosts , thanks for dropping in to say hi. I'm going to try uploading my LIVEs onto dTube and see how that goes.

hope STEEM doesn't disappoint

Very nice post Ben! It was inspiring working with you Dallas!

Dude thanks so much for your generosity and help in Dallas! Hope we can do it again!!

Really cool hot art. Hope we´ll see more of your work here. So Welcome @vonwong, I hope you enjoy steemit! Take care of your key, you wouldn't be the first artist on steemit who is losing it. ;)

Thanks @nicoletta, I'm using a password manager so hope that doesn't fail me!! =]

I have followed your work for the longest time ! seen every video analysed ever photo only to realize that they are all shot in real time, recently binge-watched the creative live sessions.

welcome to steemit ! Finally we will have an absolute gem of a creator in this community.

Whats also incredible is that apart from your usual work you can easily raise money for your social/environmental campaigns, here on steemit with SBD etc.

One thing that really stood out to me was "after 18 months of unpaid work". That phase doesn't seem to be ending for me- but probably because I haven't put in my 100%

Anyway, If you ever plan a project in India, know that you will always have a home here !

Damn I am already excited to see what impact a person like you could have on steemit/photography and the world in general.

Welcome along!

Great post Ben! I completely agree with you. I am too hopeful that Steem could be a potential for a better way of sharing and creating.

absolutely incredible, wow. way to go man with your work, every thought of putting together a skillshare/udemy course on your process/pipeline? i'm sure that would do very well. you seem new here so WELCOME to steemit, you have FOUND nirvana! :)

Welcome to steemit. You have been doing some great work and for a very good cause.

Hi Ben, been a fan of your work for a long time so its great to see you on here. Its a great community and I hope you get all the benefits from it.

nice

The most courageous think we can do for ourselves is to follow our dreams, our personal vision of life. Is to aspire to something that is unsure, insecure but important for us. Sometimes it means to quit the job, separate with your family, or something else. Good luck and keep rollin!

Congrats!!! You just made me remember January 17 will be my 3 year anniversary of leaving behind the 9 to 5.

Pop a bottle of champagne buddy! That's the way to do it!

I'm on board with this. I need to find the confidence to do something else with my life and find something I enjoy to do with my time.

congratulation, wish you happy times.

Upvoted and followed!

Wou, eres maravilloso, los medios de comunicación son la mejor manera de llegar al público para lograr cambios de pensamientos y mejorar nuestro entorno. Que jamás te detengas en este camino, un saludo desde Colombia.

This is awesome! Welcome to steemit my friend! I hope to see more of your work and shared experiences soon! :)

You've been a massive inspiration to me since I took up photography seriously two years ago. I've been following your work closely since I first discovered your work and am always excited to see your new projects as they release. I just wanted to say thanks for helping me realize my passion and for giving me and idea of what can be achieved with imagination and hard work

woooow this is great, I dont know really thanks :)

It's been exciting to follow your photographic journey and I'm stoked for the tip off about Steemit. Happy creative trails!

Dude! Welcome!!! Looking forward to all the great things you're going to post on here! By the way, I nominated you for the black and white challenge... https://steemit.com/portraitphotography/@duranc/seven-day-black-and-white-challenge-day-6-delight

Don't need to start right away, but it might give you a chance to practice your black and white photography...

Hi, I noticed your post while stalking you on twitter, and signed up on steemit immediately myself :-)
Looks like a great site - thanks for the hint and thanks for your inspiring work!

Nice article, an alternative idea for those thinking about quiting thier job is to consider career overseas to find new challenges and motivation in many new challenges and experiences whilst still earning a living and enhancing your cv :)
https://steemit.com/vincentb/@perrybarrow/overseas-career-opportunities-2018-stop-dreaming-and-pack-your-bags

You should be able to gain a massed following pretty soon I'm so sure of it @vonwong its not only because of your art but because of good karma that you've created by helping so many people and even saved a life maybe more through your awareness campaigns. This current World needs more amazing human being like you. I really wish you to attained all the good health, weath and success that you ever needed for your life and your love ones Von wong because you totally deserved it! 😄

Welcome to Steemit bro; the creative community here will definitely support you.

Oh heyyyy Benjamin! Welcome to Steemit! I've been a fan of your work for years :) You are sooo right about FB and the rest... this seems to be the place to be. I've only been here for a week or so and am so impressed by the genuinely engaged, relatively troll-free community here. Particularly in the photo community. Everyone is inspired, generous, and friendly.
I'm so glad to see that you've found your way over here!! I hope many of your fans follow you!
Cheers!

Hi;), I have seen your project on other platforms and loved it. I am very glad to find you also an Steemit. Fantastic idea, amazing project, great post. Can’t wait to see more.

Welcome to Steemit. :)

Really kool story @vonwong! Amazing how life can change, if we are open to the experience of being maliable! Welcome to the community! I am pretty new, but having a lot of fun on here! I am sure you will too with such gorgeous photography!
