Hello Steemians!
This is my first post and I'm glad to be on board. I'm relatively new to all things blockchain, but I'm trying to read up, adapt and adopt as fast as possible.
This being an introductory post, let me tell you a little about myself. First off, I'm married to my life partner, Sharon, who I met in my last year of college. We actually met roughly 31 years ago from today's date and we've been married for 30 of those years. I think we've been able to maintain a long-lasting relationship because we're best of friends, we're partners in life, business and everything we do. We both also have a really strong and mutually affirming spiritual life.
We have two children and a grandchild, who of course is the apple of our eyes. I start with my family because they are the most important thing in the world to me. I'm a real family person and I enjoy hanging out with my wife, kids, extended family and friends.
Professionally, I'm sort of an oddball, so bear with me. If nothing else, I'm hope for the person with diverse interests whose been told that in today's world you need to stay in your lane and become known for one thing.
Frankly, I don't dispute that wisdom. I mentor people from all walks of life, and I hear myself dispensing that advice at times. It's just never worked for me.
I have about 100 blog posts all over the web so you can read up on me, but here's the Reader's Digest version. I became a lawyer 25 years ago, because my granddad, who was a merchant, suggested I become his business attorney. At the time, I was 5 years old, and didn't know what that was, but I made up my mind I would become whatever he was talking about.
(Sidebar, as we say in the legal field. This is a great example of how impressionable young people are. Your words are powerful. Be sure that you plant words of love, wisdom and faith in the people that you influence. Whatever you plant, negative or positive, will surely grow).
So, I became a lawyer and went to work for a big, fancy law firm. My granddad passed away before I got licensed, but I always feel his presence. He was my inspiration. My grandma, on the other hand, was the business maven. She and granddad ran several businesses and they filled me with an equal love for business.
I would eventually combine both loves by leaving my fancy law firm and starting several businesses, some of which failed and some of which succeeded. One of those business ventures was my law firm, which I founded 20 years ago and still operate today.
After a few years in business, my wife and I felt that there was something more that we needed to do. In short, we felt a higher calling to serve people in our community. This led to the next big adventure in our lives when we started the Oasis Compassion Agency, a nonprofit organization that feeds the poor in our community, provides them with clothing and jobs.
you can look us up at http://www.oasiscompassion.org.
This is our labor of love and our way of placing hands and feet on our Christian faith. Nowadays, it seems people of faith have a lot to say about issues, but we decided we would actually DO something about it; not just talk or point out how wrong everyone else is. OK; enough of the soapbox. I'm really not soapboxy or political. I just like to see faith demonstrated by positive action.
It wasn't very long after founding The Oasis in 2002 that both Sharon and I were ordained as ministers and began a neighborhood church; all the while running the law firm and The Oasis. The church continued for roughly 4 years and we closed the mission in 2008.
That was when I began self-publishing books. I published several ebooks and two paperbacks. My second paperback is a legal thriller with a spiritual message, called "The Runner." It's the first in a series, and I am finally getting down to business on finishing Book Two. My small, but patient fan base has been waiting on that for a while. What can I say? I've been a little busy.
So, as you can see, I'm a bit of an odd bird. Lawyer, businessman, philanthropist, minister, writer, etc. I've always had the philosophy that you should go for your dreams, no matter how unlikely they may seem. I don't want to die with my song unsung.
I told my wife, if she outlives me to place on my headstone: "There lies Wayne Gill. He went for it!" Amen; that's a sermon right there, ain't it?
That's all I got for this post. It's now 12:46 a.m. Eastern Standard Time in the U.S. Which means it's now 9/26/17 and a "real-time" verification of my authenticity as a human. Lol.

Thanks @kingsley-clement. You sound like someone I need to be connected with. I'm perceiving that it's going to take some time to figure things out on here, but I'm committed to learning. I already like the platform a lot. It's much more responsive than other blogging-only platforms that I've been a part of. Thanks also for the follow. I will definitely follow you back. Wayne

Hello and welcome to Steemit! Voluntary charity is a beautiful thing. Kudos to you and your spouse for doing all that you do. Do you still practice law? I have a brother-in-law who is an attorney. As a PI in Virginia, people have recommended that I take the Law Readers path to becoming an attorney. It is not my passion though. I'm most interested in residential security.
There are a ton of other webpages to help you with Steemit. Here are some of the best for beginners:
https://steemd.com/ (This site is used to keep track of your voting power and other stats. You do not want to run out of voting power, and you only get so much per day. I keep my voting power around 80% for example.)
https://steem.makerwannabe.com/ (This site will tell you who follows you, who unfollows you, and who mutes you. It is great for meeting new people too. I regularly check it to see who has followed me to see if I should follow them back.)
https://steemit.chat/ (This site is the official chat webpage for Steemit. There are Discord channels too, but I usually stick to the official site. Come in to network and meet new friends. You can directly message people there too, so it makes it easier to communicate with your closest friends.)
Oh yeah, there are a lot of bots on here. If you see a cookie cutter reply, especially to your intro post, it is almost certainly a bot. Check the account's reputation. If it is low, I would recommend just ignoring them. Everything is public on Steemit, so you can go look at an account's comments and replies. Are they all the same? It's a bot.
Adding photos to your account as a new Steemian may be confusing at first too. The easiest way it to click to "Submit a Story." Once in there, use the built in Steemit tool to upload an image from your computer. Below the posting window, you will see "Insert images by dragging & dropping, pasting from the clipboard, or by selecting them." Click on the blue text. Once the image is uploaded, you can copy and paste the link into your account settings.
Verifying your identity is very important because it will get you more support and people will trust you more. The best way to verify is to link back to your Steemit account by using another public social media account. For example, I posted my Steemit articles from here through my Twitter account. Another person posted their Steemit information on their Facebook account. Some people will even post a video of themselves writing out their account information since that cannot be Photoshopped. The more famous a person is or the more valuable their content is, the more important it is that they verify. If a new account falls within those two categories and fails to verify, it may get blacklisted.
Again, welcome, and I've followed you! If you have any questions about getting started, look me up on the chat site.

Hey @finnian. I can't thank you enough for all of the great advice! I have a quick question. I'm trying to make my second post right now and the blue post button won't allow me. When I hover over it, it says "post as waynegill." I'm not sure what that means and why my post won't load. Everything is in there; text, images, etc. This seemed to work perfectly and easily last night when I made the introductory post. Not sure what's happening now. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - will definitely follow back.
Oh and P.S. - Follow your passion. Law is a tough gig without a real passion for it. Tks

Also, it just allowed me to post this reply to your post, but not an original blog post. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Wayne

The post issue could be bandwidth. If you have low Steem Power, you will not have much bandwidth. I would also copy and paste the text of the post out, save the title and tags, and delete it all. Close steemit.com, and log back into it. That might reset any bugs. It's still in beta but usually posting works.

Hey @finnian - Please ignore my previous comment about not being able to post. I figured it out - I was placing hashtags in the wrong place. Lol; with all your tips above, I will conquer this! Wayne
