I am an Earth science teacher. I’ve been teaching about 7 years. Prior to that, I worked at daycares for my mom. In that time, I realized that children don’t go through a traumatic moment once. Often times, it occurs from the moment they open their eyes. They enter a world that isn’t warm to their arrival. I hope to one day create a system in which individuals are able to gain the help and assistance needed to thrive and overcome obstacles. I do not like to be just another false solution. I’ve decided to teach in inner city schools to learn ways to best help and assist.
So far, I’ve learned support and understanding is needed more than the force of content. When we unburden the mind, we are able to unhinge thoughts.
I will share this story because it speaks to understanding people in general.
Last night was parent teacher conferences. A student and her mom were in a meeting with me. She was crying about feeling overwhelmed. We focused on techniques to help her deal with moments of stress. We broke down her stress into things she can accomplish and see finish. She organized her make up work into days, devoting a day to each subject. She asked each teacher via email if her method was acceptable. And she began working in her first assignment. She said she will use this to help her moving forward.
I think the world just needs people to listen and help genuinely support them.
I’m sorry for ranting. This I guess is a little introduction to me.
