Introduction post

in introduction •  8 years ago

Hi ... I'm me!

I was told I should do an introductory post, which seems like a reasonable idea. I live with my wife Emily in rural northeast Indiana, with our dog Baewulf (her choice of spelling) and a cowardly ball python named Lucius. I work as a 911 dispatcher and volunteer firefighter, serve on various town boards, and puzzle over the concept of free time. I have two grown daughters and two grandkids and ... did I mention not understanding the concept of free time?

Oh, and I write. Here's my standard author's blurb:

`Mark R Hunter is the author of two romantic comedies, Storm Chaser and its sequel, The Notorious Ian Grant, as well as a related story collection, Storm Chaser Shorts. He also published a young adult adventure, The No-Campfire Girls, and a humor collection, Slightly Off the Mark.

In addition to his new novel, Radio Red, Mark R Hunter collaborated with his wife, Emily, on the history books Hoosier Hysterical: How the West Became the Midwest Without Moving At All; Images of America: Albion and Noble County; and Smoky Days and Sleepless Nights: A Century or So With The Albion Fire Department. Mark’s work also appeared in the anthologies The Very True Legends of Ol’ Man Wickleberry and his Demise, My Funny Valentine, and Strange Portals: Ink Slingers’ Fantasy/Horror Anthology.

As if that wasn’t genre enough, Mark’s currently putting the finishing touches on—a space opera!

If there's one thing I love, it's writing! And chocolate. And writing while eating chocolate.

Welcome to Steemit My husband was a volunteer firefighter for 35 years too. Upvoted and followed.

Thanks to your husband for his service! It gets a bit harder after the first quarter of a century or so ... for some reason the rest of the world seems to speed up, but I go the same speed as before. That's my explanation, anyway.

Well, thats more like it, isn't it? I would follow you now, but I do already for years, so... :)
Btw, is that a gun you wear there in the photo? I didn't realize book signings are that dangerous...

No, that's my fire department pager. Turns out they expect volunteers to be on call 24 hours a day.

Oh a pager... I thought they have died out, since everybody has a cell phone nowadays. Wouldn't it be cheaper to send a text message to everybody, instead of renting this service? And it would save people to take another gadget with them, keep it charged up and all.

No, it's not a rented service. They're radio pagers: When we have a call they not only beep to alert us, but we get a voice message from the dispatcher advising what the call is. We can then leave them on "open", to get updated information while we're responding to the station. Also, they're much more rugged than cell phones! Better protected from smoke, heat, water, and so on.

Ok, I understand. Its just that... Never mind, I guess its just that we gernans are always thinking practical (politicians excluded).
Lets say, I just hope the people wearing those devices are same as resistant against fumes, heat and water than the device itself. :)

Most of us wear them on our belts under our protective clothing -- so they're more likely to be damaged by sweat than anything else! For those of us who don't wear portable radios, they let us hear the radio traffic from inside and outside the building -- a nice safety tool. Of course, we have at least one member with a radio on each crew.

Howdy @markrhunter!

Hey -- that's me! I've been too busy with original writing to write much fanfiction lately, but I've been doing that since 2004.
