Invest in yourself

I see musicians having a hard time betting on themselves. I get asked (almost daily) to invest either time or resources into an artist or a producer. I’m met with promises of money and exposure for my brand, but on close examination I struggle to find where they have bet on themselves previously. I ask them what work they’ve put into their craft and they tell me they’ve been writing songs for a few years. When I ask them what investments they’ve made then I get all sorts of stories about why they can’t put up money for themselves and how they are the next big thing.

My issue with this situation is that I’ll be asked to invest my time and my resources into someone that hasn’t done anything substantial for themselves.   Why would anyone take the risk and put money or resources into a musician who hasn’t tried paid advertising, getting themselves at least 1 gig every other month, understanding performance rights organizations, understanding the difference between mixing and mastering, using grainy cell phone pictures in their profile or getting radio play? You won’t be an asset to me if I have to spend all my time and energy teaching you everything. I would spend the first year teaching this artist/producer the fundamentals and they still might fail purely because there’s a lack of motivation and initiative. These qualities require self-awareness which can’t be taught and the situation is almost certain to fail. Invest all you can before you expect help from someone else.

Rant aside, I really do like seeing new people trying to make it onto the music scene. Change is great, but I believe the greatest change should be experienced by those that put in the most work. I also believe in risking it. If you have an extra R500 why not risk buying new equipment? I promise you that you will end up using that equipment because YOU USED YOUR RESOURCES TO ACQUIRE IT. Use that R500 for online marketing. Use it to start you off with piano lessons. I promise you that you will take it extra seriously because you’ve put up that money. This is one of the reasons investment is so important. It shows that you’ve taken full responsibility for what you want and you’re willing to stop at nothing to get it. External people see this drive and this pushes them to invest in you. It’s very simple. No one bets on the person that doesn’t put in the hours.

What happens if you don’t have extra money or resources? That’s garbage! One thing we should all have is time. If you have zero time to make music then you aren’t prioritizing your music. Time is THE most valuable resource. I’ve learnt that in most instances it’s more valuable than money. Once you realize this then you will grind ‘til the sun comes up. If all else fails and you have nothing more to give, give your time. Give time to write songs each day. Give time to make 1 industry phone call a week to inquire about something. Give time to make beats on a daily basis. Give time to read up new songwriting techniques. Give time to learning what the hell compression is. You’ll thank me for it.

Risk also requires sacrifice. You won’t have money to play with online advertising if you’re spending all your extra cash on other things. You won’t have time to search the net for blogs you can submit music to if you spend all evening watching TV. Set goals for yourself and make those changes in your life that will allow you to reach those goals. If any of this resonates with you then I encourage you to read more of my posts. There’s always something new to learn and there’s always new motivation out there to acquire.

Keep inspired,

SB

Hey @shadowpub! I don't know if you are looking for more members to recruit to the #Steemitramble but @adriansilas really writes truthfully informative posts about the local music scene and laws in South Africa.

He also tackles musical mindset when it comes to composition, production, music promotion etc.

Me being a musician myself, personally dig his writings and always look forward to more of his content regarding this topic, lets get him on the Discord Ramble?

How do we go about that?

You know me, always asking questions and things haha

P.S. This post was one of my nominees! \m/

Thanks so much for this. I'd need a little explanation and direction about it but this sounds awesome. Let me know.

Yea dude!

Spoken like a true artist who knows the struggle! I can relate to preeeetty much everything you spoke about in that article, time management is key, if you're going to be a self-made artist you better start putting some time aside for reading, writing, planning, designing, marketing, networking, photography, production, post-production and every now and then you get to play some music haha

speaking to my soul. When people arrive at studio and say "I'll be the next big thing after I drop this song and it's video" I don't know where to begin. How do you quantify the work it takes and try get the artist to unlearn all nonsense about record deals and fame that they've been fed. what a headache...

Yea dude, it is sad, there are no deals, and quick-fixes man, its all just pure hard work!

Wiser words never spoken. This can be applied to a multitude of different industries and circumstances

I know quite a few Musicians who should have extra cash to invest as they have acquired amplifiers and other Gear from me without paying for it! ( My Bad for trusting them) As I was typing this, all power went off for the night, cannot remember what I was adding . Have a Great 2018.

I'm trying to establish whether they acquired the gear legally or they took it off your hands without asking. Have a great 2018 too.

Legally agreeing to pay me off over 3 months , One did pay me off , took over 2 years! Most of these Guys took the stuff and then traded it in on something else , so you could never , go get it back again. I own a Sound Treated rehearsal Room for Bands , with lots of Gear in it. In my youth I would probably have organised a brief Hospital Stay for them. With age I have become more tolerant?, but in the end it is my own stupidity , and being more gullible to sad tales of misfortune!
The worst have been Pastors of (so called ) Christian Communities . Anyhow , won't ever happen again.

Woah. Sounds like you've got quite a few stories to tell. I suppose you're stronger for it though. Are you still involved in the music sphere or have you had enough?

Still involved. Number of Songs I have never recorded , 2018 should do it!

Duuuuuuude!

That is so brutal! I also ran a membership based rehearsal space here in Cape Town South Africa 2 years ago!

Loads of admin, little reward, time managment, you're running around while other create music and you don't. Not easy, my drummer at the time was running it with me, was cool for awhile but then we ended up getting scammed by the landlord as he ducked with one month's worth of rent and the owner held it against us cause they could catch his employee... all I wanted to do was have a stable place to play music you know?

Membership based , sounds like a Good Idea? Sorry about you being taken! I am fortunate in that I owned the premises, now I stay at my Son's place , so pretty much the same. I am considered to be a pretty good lyricist , if you know of any one who is more into melodies? My earliest posts were some lyrics I had done.
