Almost every profession has some sort of random drug testing right? Wrong. I am her to tell you that the one profession you probably think already has stricter random drug testing than almost any other profession doesn't even implement it. That profession is Law Enforcement.
You heard that right. The profession that gives a person arrest powers, the right to carry multiple firearms and many non lethal weapons, access to highly sensitive information, training on how to severely injure or kill someone and the ability to absolutely destroy someone's life, barely requires any drug testing. The situations that are exceptions would involve an on duty accident where someone is injured, if they kill someone or possibly if someone made an accusation of drug use. The rest of the time they can feel free to use/abuse whatever drugs they want with no consequences. This is absolutely ridiculous and unless the public becomes outraged about this, it will never change.
I would think there would already be outrage over this but maybe the public is unaware. That is the purpose of this article. You would think with all the police killings, brutality cases and with all the recent outrage that everyone including the Police would be demanding mandatory drug testing but that is not the case. Wouldn't this be a great way to weed out the, "few bad apples", that law enforcement claims it has. It would also help get this problem under control.
Beyond all the street drugs, prescription drugs and alcohol the Police can abuse don't forget about steroids. We have all seen a police officer who is way too big and muscular for someone who works all the time, has a family life and a social life. Lets face it, they are way too big to not be on steroids. They have the body of a professional body builder, who spends almost all of their time making their body look like that and usually they are using steroids themselves. Now you put a person on steroids in high stress/high adrenaline situations that a normal person would have trouble controlling themselves in and throw steroid rage on to that situation. That is a recipe for police brutality and or the next police killing. Now put a crack cocaine or opiate addict in those high stress/high adrenaline situations and you have the same recipe. We have drug addicts in a profession where we need people of high integrity and honesty. We have to weed them out.
I believe it is time for all us to demand drug testing in law enforcement. I hope that you agree and we can work together on making people aware of this serious problem.
