What is the Internet of Things(IoT) and How Does it Work?

The Internet of Things is a somewhat abstract concept but has been gaining popularity in recent years. The idea that tries to represent is pretty well illustrated by its name, things that we use everyday that connect to the Internet, but in reality it is much more than that.

The Internet of Things gives the ability to objects that formerly were connected by closed circuit, such as cameras, sensors, and so on, and allows them to communicate globally through the use of networks. To define it in a simple way, we could say that the internet of things is a network that interconnects physical objects using the internet.

In homes, an ideal example of the functioning of the internet of things begins when your alarm clock sounds in the morning and at that precise moment your coffee maker begins to prepare coffee with your specifications just like you like it. When you brush your teeth, your toothbrush detects cavities and schedules an appointment with the dentist, your refrigerator tells you which foods are going to expire and which ones are no longer listed and make the order to some supermarket.

One of the concerns about the internet of things is the amount of data that would be generated with so many connected devices communicating with each other, as well as home security, since a hacker could attack the entire ecosystem of your home.

In my opinion it seems that in the next few years this would be revolutionizing the way we live and making many science fiction movies not so futuristic.

Definatly a good explanation of the term!
I would also consider the fact that the big amount of data is generating a big network load which has to get transferred over WiFi networks.
But fortunately there are smart people developing new protocols and transport layers to "outsource" the load. Like ZigBee and so on

Thanks! So far they are making it easier to build smart solutions, let see what happens.Thank you very much for your input.

Simple and precise, now I can internalize it much better. ;)

That was my intention, explain it in a simple way, thank you.
