Well, it and Byteball are the only two cryptocurrencies that I know of that are based on a distributed ledger different from the blockchain. What they use is a directed acyclic graph called the Tangle. There are supposed to be no fees, no scaling problem, and it should be quantum resistant. Basically it should be the backbone of monetizing the Internet of Things.
