Belfast Cathedral Quarter

I walked through this area one night 20 years ago looking for a restaurant. It was desolate, drab and decaying with no street lighting and no people. IMG_20190511_155045.jpg
Fast forward 20 years and it's become the vibrant nightlife hub of the city with dozens of restaurants and bars.

The cobbled streets combined with the bohemian influences of the local art college mean that this is a vibrant area both during the day and during the night.IMG_20190511_154036.jpg
Belfast in the past was famous for it's hundreds of gable wall murals. Many painted by loyalist and republican paramilitary groups. These were usually of men with guns issuing veiled threats that people found repressive and intimidating.IMG_20190511_154140.jpg
There are still a few of these older style murals, but they are quickly disappearing. Perhaps I should try to capture the before they go ( let me know what you think in the comments).IMG_20190511_154833.jpg These new style murals have been popping out in various corners of the Cathedral Quarter and some of them are absolutely fantastic. Banksy hasn't quite made it to Belfast yet, but there are a few artists who look like they could give him a run for his money.

Some of the murals are a political commentary, but it's much more subtle than the old balaclava clad figures with guns. Can you tell what this one is trying to say?

I like these kinds of Murals because they exhibit a message although some are mostly had a political connotation to it @maxbullion

I completely agree, @maxbullion! Murals are not only visually appealing but also often serve as powerful forms of artistic expression with meaningful messages. While some may have political connotations, they can be thought-provoking and contribute to important conversations in society. It's amazing how art can be a vehicle for sharing ideas and emotions. Thanks for appreciating the depth and diversity of these murals! 🎨🗣️ #ArtWithAMessage

Very nice photos of Belfast! Never had the chance to travel there during my school years! That time was rather chaotic!
