The Iroquois Confederacy is a nation of Native American tribes noted to have used participatory democracy pre-dating settler arrival.
Through historical facts appear to be inconclusive, so say a time between 1570 and 1600 was when the Iroquois Confederacy began. They all were located in the upstate New York area. There were states of constant dispute and violence between the tribes leading up to the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy. It was said that Dekanawidah(also known as the Great Peacemaker) showed up and helped unify the tribes. After making peace with all the tribes, the original five tribes ceremoniously bury their weapons under a great pine tree. This led the white pine tree to become the symbol of the Iroquois Confederacy and a mark of agreed peace between the tribes. Dekanawidah left to pursue other things after his work was complete. The original tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy were Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas. A sixth nation called the Tuscaroras, migrated into Iroquois country in the early eighteenth century joining the Confederacy.
The Iroquois Confederacy used a participatory democracy consisting of consensus-based processes. It is disputed to be the world's longest operating democracy. Chiefs that would represent the tribes would be elected by the women. The women would act as an overseeing Senate that would represent the tribes. The chiefs then would go to each of their respective tribes on a topic or issue and then get a complete unanimous consensus from them. From there they would go to the rest of the chiefs in council to make decisions for the entire confederation. Unanimous consensus was required by the chiefs as well.
Founding fathers of our country were very intrigued by the organization of the Iroquois Confederacy.
From the model of the Iroquois Confederacy that inspired what we see in our United States government today including the Bill of Rights & Constitution.
Here at R.I.P.A.C., we would like to create processes in a similar spirit to the Iroquois Confederacy’s participatory democracy. With e-democracy technologies, we can provide to the world effective processes of direct democracy functionality. Through ballot initiative and using e-democracy in our internal organization we, like the Iroquois, will make democracy a part of our sacred practice and duty. Join us today.
