The Island of San Andrés (also known as San Andrés Island) is the largest of the islands that are part of the San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina Archipelago, with a total area of 26 km².2 Colombia currently dominates the island, forming part of the only insular department in the country. Although Nicaragua, the physically closest nation to this island, also claimed sovereignty over it and the adjacent islands, the International Court of Justice ruled Colombia's total sovereignty over the archipelago on November 19, 2012.
The climate of the island is warm, oscillating between 26 ° C and 29 ° C where two summer and winter seasons predominate. The winds help a little to alleviate the heat, blowing generally from the east, and when there are storms in the Caribbean the winds blow strongly from the northeast. Fish and seafood are common in the island's cuisine, with recipes that include seafood, prawns, crabs and snapper. The main accompaniments are rice with coconut, patacón, yucca, yam, breadfruit and beans.
Some of the typical dishes of San Andrés are the rondón, the fish meatball, the snail soup and the stewed snail, as well as various preparations with beef and pork.
Among the traditional desserts of the island are the cocada, the coconut ball, sesame candy, and cake of auyama, corn and banana.
Swimming among manta rays, snorkeling and diving in coral reefs that allow a visibility that exceeds thirty meters are some plans that delight those who come to the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina in Colombia. Visitors also relax with the simple rhythm of reggae, admire natural parks, walk along deserted beaches and enjoy the slow pace of time.
