Al-JUMUAH, its importance and requirements

Alhamdulilah it's another Friday here in Nigeria, and In Sha Allah I will be talking briefly about the importance of this day and all that is expected of us as a believer.

Of course, this day is a very special day to we Muslims has it has been described by Almighty Allah (SWT) that it is the best of all days and there are obligations attached to it for us.

I will like to make REFERENCE to the Al-Qur'an verse in Suratul Al-Jumuah which also support the importance of this day.

Surah Al-Jumua, Verse 9:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

O you who believe! when the call is made for prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trading; that is better for you, if you know.

As it has been clearly stated in the glorious Qur'an, Almighty Allah has made it mandatory for us to abandon all our doings upon hearing the call to prayer and hasten to the masjid to perform Salat.

Below are some highlighted Sunnahs of the Prophet (PBUH) as regards this day

1. It is very essential to take bath on this day before proceeding to masjid

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ غُسْلُ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَاجِبٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُحْتَلِمٍ ‏"
‏‏.‏
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male (Muslim) who has attained the age of puberty."

1. It is also important for us to clip our nails.

2. Chewing of siwak is highly recommended.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ـ أَوْ عَلَى النَّاسِ ـ لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ مَعَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ ‏"
‏‏.‏
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak for every prayer."

1. Putting on nice garment and making use of good perfume if available is also recommended.

Below are some ethics of this day.

1. Try to get to masjid as early as possible ( before the imam gets to the altar)

2. Get yourself a comfortable place to sit and perform your two rakat of Salat

3. Once the imam starts the sermon, it is a very bad at this point to talk or start playing with our mobile phones

.....And lastly make enough dua this day......

May Almighty Allah accept all our prayers and make he cause us to die as believer and be part of the successful ones hereafter, ameen.
