TOP 3 Winners Named in Keangaro's "She Liked It" Writing Contest Prompt

in isleofwrite •  7 years ago  (edited)

Thank you, everyone, for your entries.

My original contest post stated:

The decision on who goes into the anthology is made by @TreasureHunter.

Meanwhile, a generous Islander has transferred 15 sbd to my wallet so that I could award a Top 3, with each of the three winning 5 sbd -- which is not a promise of curation, but a simple "Keangaroo's personal favorites"-- and here they are, in the order their entries appeared:

@guytmartland

Spacecraft Cover

@authorofthings

Belated Garden

@jrhughes

Lovestruck: A Bloody Modern Fairy Tale, Parts I and II

Thank you for entering!

(Note: entering and/or winning this contest is completely separate from being curated, i.e., published, in the upcoming anthologies.)

16-February-2018 News Flash

This morning, a new entry landed in the comment section of the reminder post.

@jadams2k18 Little Cup - She Liked It

Peter runs his late father's quaint coffee shop. Times changed but instead of updating to accommodate a faster paced world,

they made the old concept of taking the time to have a cup of coffee stay in the past.
The profits began to decline, but Peter did not want to change the concept of place that his father had created.

The story is charming and sweet, with the kind of ending I like best. I would advise @jadams2k18 to take advantage of Steemit's free writing workshops, such as Isle of Write's, via the Discord channel, to make sure the story is as polished and publication-ready as it can be. That said, let me reiterate, I liked it! In keeping with my goal to reward the efforts of new writers and new Steemit members,

There. Missed the deadline by a day? Keangaroo is nothing if not forgiving.

And now, back to yesterday's post.

This is the fourth contest I've hosted, always in fun.

I had the idea it would be even more fun if the prize led to being curated for Isle of Write's upcoming anthologies. The team is halfway into an 8-week curation period. This post explains the curation project. It is in no way necessary to enter this contest to be considered for the anthologies. Something you wrote weeks ago or last year can certainly be dusted off and entered for consideration in the anthologies--as long as it was published at Steemit first, and nowhere else. So much good content is overlooked just due to the sheer volume of creators posting in this venue.

If your contest entry happens to catch the attention of the curators and happens to be curated, you will be notified with a message in the comments section of your post. A 5 SBD reward will appear in your wallet, and it will be yours to keep, whether or not you agree to being published. The @TreasureHunter team is still curating. Follow @isleofwrite for updates on who has already accepted nominations to be published.

Genres can be flexible, these days. E.g., if you have a Fantasy or Sci-Fi that can multi-task as a horror story, bring it on! More than one author has taken that option. E.g., Brad Preslar posted a science fiction story last week It(not as a contest entry, just to make that clear), and it fits just fine in Thrillers:

@bradpreslar

The Survivors Covenant

He got the coveted @TreasureHunter message--

A Treasure Hunter from the Isle of Write found this story to be a gem worthy of curating and, if you accept, publication in our upcoming anthology series. A 5 SBD reward should appear in your wallet momentarily. Please navigate to the The Isle of Write on Discord and type @TreasureHunter into any chat to inform us of your arrival. As soon as possible an Isle Treasure Hunter will contact you to answer any questions you may have and verify if you would like to be included in the publication.
Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your talent with the Steemit Fiction community!

It is not for me to declare that any Keangaroo "Contest" entries are officially being curated. This post is to let you know I read your entries for my own contest, and I thank all of you for writing and entering.

I try to be as liberal with every prompt as a judge can be. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if the prompt took you into new territory, and your story morphed into something altogether “other” than the prompt, I love it! Let your imagination run free. I’m not a bureaucrat. All of your entries are read, every word, and appreciated. I’ve seen contest judges warn you that if the first sentences don’t win them over, they cast the entry into the DNF - do not finish - bin.

Winners! Prizes!

This is going to look backward or unorthodox, but I've decided to reward our newest Isle members for their entries, whether or not they find a home in the anthologies.

If anyone's entry was tagged, or posted at the contest site, and I missed it, please let me know.

The following contest entries are from veteran Isle of Write members who have been Curied and/or curated and/or published, and all have won writing contests before. Thank you for entering Keangaroo's "She Liked it" - and it goes without saying, she did.

For your convenience (who clicks on links and scrolls off in search of all the entries, right?), here is the list of entries.

Questions?

Don’t be afraid to ask a question that may already be answered somewhere else. Your best bet is to pop into the Discord channel and let @Thunder_God or the Founders walk you through it all. You can ask me just about anything, but I might start fangirling you. (Sorry, @hazem91, but you’re just so sweet, as well!).

The answer to @hazem91’s question, by the way, is yes!

Write it!

Post it - tag it - come to our Discord channel and post the link in the appropriate channel. If you happen to get the wrong one, @Thunder_God or whoever is watching will help you along.

Thank you for reading and for all your camaraderie and fellowship at IOW!

haha you could answer me in private .. but what's the fun in that loool
I was talking about This poem
But I've already posted it without the tag so... maybe I'll have to enter with a new poem 😉

(I hope this doesn't count as spamming! if it does just tell me and I'll remove the link)

A rose feeds on a dead body... interesting perspective... life eats life, life consumes life.
The nightmares and the darkest fears
The weeping and the late nights' tears
The same torture of these last years
For all of this is just a sign
That you're feeding, that you're fine

Some great lines there!
You have seven days to edit #hashtags, so tag it #isleofwrite if you want to earn a mention. No hashtag, no mention in the Highlights. I'm no longer a curator for the anthologies, but follow @isleofwrite and watch for updates if you're interested. Good luck!

yeah I know but the thing is .. it's one month old lol
thanks I'll keep an eye on the isle 😉
I don't want any other poems to miss the chance !

If you join the Discord channel, you can post a link to your poem no matter how long it's been on Steeemit. Just gotta find the right channel (Poetry Links), under "Sharing Shores" - you look young enough to navigate these labyrinthine cyberscapes :)

This plant is worse than your rose. I kid you not. Thought of you @hazem91 when I saw this:
If a sheep gets close enough, the spines can snag on the wool of the sheep, entrapping them. The sheep starve and die at the base of the plant, thus providing a rather grisly but effective fertilizer. https://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2013/0622/Sheep-eating-plant-towers-over-English-countryside.-Oh-my

wow
mayb I4ll write about this one day :D

Well, if you do, Don't ask me to read it
Poor little sheep, its wool caught in the spines of a tall plant,
stuck there, starving to death, to feed the Killer Vegetation.
Animals eat plants. Plant are NOT supposed to eat ANIMALS.
This is sick sick sick and backward and scary and now I'm dreading what dreams may come to me in the night.

haha maybe I'll tag it #isleofwrite and then you'll "have to" read 😅
