Another "must to do" when visiting Israel is to visit the city of Tiberias on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.

These photos were taken from a hill above the city of Tiberias.

Tiberias - One of four Jewish holy cities, along with Safed, Jerusalem and Hebron. Several important Jewish scholars are buried here. It was founded in AD 20 by Herold the Great's son, Herod Antipas. By the seventh century it had become a thriving academic center.

Battling Muslims and Crusaders largely destroyed it in the 12th century and a massive earthquake in 1837 finished off the remainder of the ancient buildings. Consequently it is now very much a modern resort with a few crumbling remains scattered around.

We were here over Shabbat - the Jewish Sabbath. Everything closes down on Friday evening and only reopens on the Saturday night - it was wonderful to witness.
