The European Union on Monday assured President Mahmoud Abbas that he supported his ambition for East Jerusalem to be the capital of a Palestinian state, in the latest rejection of the block presented by US President Donald Trump, to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The High Representative of the European Union after Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, affirmed the commitment of the bloc: "I want to convey to Abbas the firm and decisive commitment of the European Union with the two-State solution with Jerusalem as the shared capital," he emphasized.
At a meeting held in Brussels with EU foreign ministers, Abbas repeated his great interest in making East Jerusalem his capital and urged European governments to recognize a Palestinian state arguing that this would not harm negotiations with Israel over a peace agreement for the region.
