Well... Kind of... That's at least the reason most given. It was also perhaps because the U.S. and U.K. saw an intrinsic benefit to having an ally in the region that owed its existence to them. Unfortunately, as with Apartheid South Africa, the tacit support of the U.S. is literally the thing keeping it going.
In S.A. it was cheap gold and 'the threat of Communism' that kept the U.S. from doing more than slapping wrists and wagging fingers at the Apartheid Regime. It is no coincidence that Apartheid only ended after the USSR collapsed. The situation in Israel is a lot worse that Apartheid South Africa ever got, but the similarities when it comes to how the U.S. keeps these regimes in place because it suits their foreign policy goals are quite striking.
