A cease-fire?

Normally I'd love a cease-fire. But let's think practically and strategically here, not just operate on short-term moral intuitions.

Israel had a de facto cease-fire didn't they? Then Hamas broke it. And they have recently vowed to keep attacking until Israel is destroyed and stated their hope that they have created a state of permanent war.

Can they be expected to abide by a cease-fire? Is it only Israel that is expected to abide by a cease-fire, regardless of Hamas's future actions?

Pragmatically, what are Israel's options here? A unilateral cease-fire in which they allow Hamas to continue killing Israelis is not a plausible request of any country. Surrender to Hamas, and let an authoritarian extremist hate group take over Israel (I mean, one even worse than Likud, who at least accept that they have to stand for re-election)?

What other options do they really have after this except to try to eliminate or at least cripple Hamas?

I assume the cease-fire advocates are mostly well-meaning people who aren't sneakily advocating the elimination of Israel, but I think they're not just soft-hearted, but soft-minded as well.
