Atrabiliarios - Melancholy and mourning.

🇬🇧 As you well know last month for a holiday/work I spent a few days in Barcelona. On a morning when I was free, I visited the MACBA museum of contemporary art, I took several photos of works that caught my curiosity, not for leading me to say wow how nice, but more questions like... Why? For what purpose?

I'm not someone who likes to write on long posts, I would never want to bore my readers, so I prefer to share a little at a time. Today I chose a very particular work of a Colombian artist, Doris Salcedo, her art is very influenced by her country of origin and she prefers the use of simple objects, in her works we often perceive feelings of trauma, pain and loss, everything is linked to poverty and the difficulties that derive from her childhood.

The work I share is called Atrabiliarios (1), (2) e (3), composed in 1993 is one of the best known series of works by Doris Salcedo, where she collaborated with the families victims from suffering related to drug trafficking and the civil war. Getting in touch with the rural communities, the artist realized that very often the only way to recognize a missing person was through their shoes, from there she composed a series of works using the shoes of the missing persons, inserting them in small holes covered with translucent parchment. The title of this work derives from the ancient Castilian and recalls the meaning of melancholy and mourning.

Personally after reading the description of the work, my questions "why" and "for what purpose" they were trivial. I was struck by a strange sensation, a sense of amazement for the work associated with the thought that went naturally to the owners of those shoes. At first glance I would never have expected all this, the work exudes a very intense sadness and sense of desolation, the artist has managed to convey deep feelings through simple objects, but linked to tragic events that often, too often, are ignored.

🇮🇹 Come ben sapete il mese scorso per una vacanza/lavoro ho passato alcuni giorni a Barcellona. In una mattina in cui ero libero, ho visitato il museo dell'arte contemporanea il MACBA, li ho scattato diverse foto ad opere che hanno colto la mia curiosità, non per avermi portato a dire wow che bello, ma più domande come... Perchè? A quale scopo?

Non sono uno che ama protrarsi in lunghi post, non vorrei mai annoiare i miei lettori, per questo preferisco condividere un po' per volta. Oggi ho scelto un'opera molto particolare di un'artista Colombiana, Doris Salcedo, la sua arte è molto influenzata dal suo paese d'origine e predilige l'uso di oggetti semplici, nei sui lavori spesso si percepiscono sensazioni di trauma, dolore e perdita, il tutto è legato alla povertà e alle difficoltà che ne derivano dalla sua infanzia.

L'opera che condivido si chiama Atrabiliarios (1),(2) e (3), composta nel 1993 è una delle serie di lavori più conosciuti di Doris Salcedo, dove ha collaborato con le famiglie vittime di sofferenze legate al traffico di droga e la guerra civile. Entrando in contatto con le comunità rurali, l'artista capì che molto spesso l'unico modo per riconoscere una persona scomparsa era tramite le sue scarpe, da li compose una serie di lavori utilizzando le scarpe delle persone scomparse, inserendole in piccoli fori ricoperti da pergamena traslucida. Il titolo di questa opera deriva dall'antico Castigliano e richiama il significato di malinconia e lutto.

Personalmente dopo aver letto la descrizione dell'opera, le mie domande “perchè” e “a quale scopo” risultarono banali. Fui colto da una sensazione strana, un senso di stupore per l'opera associato al pensiero che andò naturalmente ai proprietari di quelle scarpe. A prima vista non mi sarei mai aspettato tutto questo, l'opera emana una tristezza e senso di desolazione umana molto intenso, l'artista è riuscita a trasmettere sensazioni profonde attraverso i semplici oggetti, ma legati a tragici eventi che molto, troppo spesso sono ignorati.
