Part 1: Introduction to Ruff and RuffChain

The Internet of things (IoT) technology allowed different objects in our lives to become digitally interconnected and communicate with each other. Homes, cars, TVs, even toasters, air-conditioners and coffee machines suddenly started working in synch and it looked like the future was finally here.
Few years after IoT became mainstream, however, there are still a lot of problems to be addressed and that proved to be a major barrier for further development. Some of them include:

  • Fragmentation – IoT products and groups of products are still fragmented, working in closed isolated networks. We have different software and applications for the many IoT connected things which heavily impacts the networkability.
  • Standardization – There are variety of standards and IoT protocols for products on all layers.
  • Security of large-scale IoT application –IoT devices are being exploited by hackers who infiltrate their network thanks to the low security levels, multiple weak access points and a large chain of products, devices, platforms, vendors, third party resources companies etc.
  • Trusted interoperability between IoT systems
  • Ease of use and flexibility –Unifying standards in the application layer is required as current IoT systems are difficult to develop and maintain.

Ruff is a company working to improve the current IoT technology by making it easier to access and use by both developers and end customers.

Few years ago, they created the Ruff OS for IoT applications, enabling the same application code to be operated on different boards without the need for cross compiling or board programming. This unified operating system, which was built to replace the original embedded operating systems, managed to resolve the problem of fragmentation and standardization in IoT and was moving to close the gap between software and hardware.
As part of the Ruff OS, the company provided a package of solutions for the IoT industry - SDK software tools development kit, software package sharing, and IoT development suite and created the Ruff Plant Insight, an IoT application for the industrial sector.

Aiming to perfect the symbiosis between hardware and software, Ruff also released a hardware product - the Intelligent Gateway to the IoT, with the three key advantages of compatibility (plug and play), scalability (software defines hardware) and maintainability (OOTB). The client could now complete the configuration of a device in only three easy steps.

The company took all necessary steps to become a leader in IoT development and management, so the next logical step was embracing blockchain technology to bring the project to the next level and face security and trusted interoperability issues. In other words –open the closed IoT systems and make them communicate.
The decentralized and distributed characteristics of Blockchain combined with the advantages of Ruff IoT OS resulted in the creation of RuffChain.

RuffChain contains a distributed operating system and an open main chain, connecting peer to peer network and consensus mechanism from the virtual world to reality. The combination of edge computing and blockchain enhances usability to meet the Internet of Things demand for real-time flexibility and make growth possible.
Next week I will perform an in-depth analysis of the main features of the RuffChain platform to see how exactly they plan to use the blockchain to solve trusted interoperability and security issues in IoT.
