It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Emmy Award Fun Fact!

In "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", the bar that the main characters own is used over and over as a metaphor for the show itself. In the episode "The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award" (season 9, episode 3), the gang competes for the Best Bar Award given by the Bar and Restaurant Association. In order to actually have a chance at winning, they decide to go to the bar that won the prize on the previous year. Here is where the analogy between bars and TV shows becomes most evident. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" differentiates itself from other TV comedies by not having a laugh track. A laugh track is when in a show, whenever something funny happens, they insert a laugh track. The laugh track plays a key role. Think about the show "Friends". It not only makes clear what kind of humor the show is aiming for, but it also motivates people to laugh along who would not have laughed otherwise. At the award winning bar, the gang realizes that every time the bartender rings a bell, all the people drink. Furthermore, they realize that it is a fun activity to do in synchrony and even though they criticize it at first, they end up adopting the behavior. Does this ring a bell regarding the laugh track? Even though the show was in season 9, episode 3, it had never won an award. This may be in part because of the nature of it's politically incorrect and raw humor. This is what inspired the creation of this episode. During the whole episode, the gang tries to recreate everything the award winning bar was doing. Nevertheless, after all their failed attempts, the episode finishes with the following scene:

The show not only had a huge following, but they were also confident on their own genius even though other fancy politically correct organization would not recognize them. They kept on doing their thing and afterwards, soon enough, the show won an Emmy award. To see a full list of the awards won by the show, click on this link.
