You've probably heard the story, Ivan Pavlov rang a bell whenever he fed his dog and his dog learned to drool on command. But the truth is way, way more horrible.
Ivan Pavlov is the father of what we now call classical conditioning. His discovery, that you can condition a dog to drool at the sound of a bell, has become pretty much the basis for both modern psychology and education.
Innumerable people have been helped by the methods, treatments, and therapies that were borne out of his discovery. But the way he made this discovery, and the money he made off of it is enough to turn your stomach.
So the question has to be asked, do the ends justify the means?
