Water Fountain in Jaffa.

On our first visit to Jaffa, it was very hot and we were thirsty. We found a Water Fountain outside a Mosque on the old Jerusalem Road and were able to quench our thirst. Later we went on a "free" walking tour around Jaffa and the guide told us an interesting story about this Water Fountain.

In the 1800s the Sultan was outside the city on a walk and returned late. The Gates into the City were already closed and the guards at the gate would not open the gates not believing it was the Sultan. He was forced to sleep outside and suffered from cold and thirst as many late arrivals to the City had had to endure in the past.

He had this Water Fountain built outside the City Walls to provide water for late arrivals to the City.

We felt a sense of gratitude as we too had benefited from drinking from this Water Fountain.
