For The Love Of Curry

in jahm •  5 years ago

Curry is one of the most popular street food dishes around the world, and today gets served in restaurants in almost every country.

You can find curry being served everywhere from Jamaica to Japan, India, South Korea, Pakistan, Thailand, the UK, and beyond.

In places like Jamaica you can find it commonly in dishes like goat stew, made with items like onion, thyme, garlic, turmeric, and coconut milk. In regions where it is popular and served often, there are a variety of tweaks to one curry recipe or another, offering meat-varieties and also vegetarians options too.

The love of curry is so intense that you can find a number of curry festivals that have taken place all over the world, annual celebrations surrounding this beloved dish.

Celebrating Curry In The Caribbean

One festival centered around curry is known as the Bigga Westmoreland Curry Festival.

The Bigga Westmoreland Curry Festival is expected to take place coming up in April 2020 and as in the past, again hundreds are expected to show up for the occasion. The Bigga Westmoreland Curry Festival will feature a variety of curry dishes, previously highlighted recipes have come from India, Thailand, Cuba, Barbados, Jamaica, Italy, and other regions.

They feature musical entertainment and through the festival have actively raised funds for the Westmoreland school and other community and charity projects.

A variety of meats, including fish, beef, pork, crab, chicken, and other items, have been curried in the past at the festival. It's designed to be a family-fun festival that offers multiple activities for families to engage in. There is fun, entertainment, and of course some good food.

There are a myriad of curry-themed food festivals that take place around the world, with the biggest one being held in East London of all places. That festival is known as the Brick Lane Curry Festival and gets held in October.

For the one being held in a few months in Jamaica, it has been going on for more than 15 years now.

As a result of the annual curry celebration, Westmoreland has effectively cemented itself as becoming known as the official curry region or 'Curry County' in the area.

The economic benefits have reportedly been astounding and significant from the curry commerce. This is one event that organizers insist isn't just for locals but one that they hope can be used to target tourists as well.

Curry, along with other spices that are on the hot side......we love them all. To me, it is a love/ hate relationship while eating our favorite food.

But on a side note, the use of curry in street food vendors, it can be used to mask the flavor of slightly aged meat that can cause issues to trusting tourists, not used to eating local foods served by locals.

Here in Zulia, a goat is prepared in coconut with curry and it is more or less like this, excellent flavor, to suck your bones.
