Jamaica Looking To Extend Their Lockdown

in jahm •  5 years ago

The Jamaican government recently put into a place a temporary lockdown period for the region.

Now they will be looking to extend that curfew and those restrictions.

Some reports suggest that they've been seeing a rapid decline in violent crime in the area thanks to recent restrictions on movement and for this reason they might seek to extend the curfew. However, violent crime isn't the reason for these lockdown periods, as they've been presented to the public as a tool to help battle the virus, not to impact crime rates.

No dates have been given for the new period of the curfew, it isn't clear how long it will last.

They shouldn't be toying with restrictions to people's liberty as a potential criminology experiment.

Right now the curfew is from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and no word yet on when it will end.

Who knows if they might even go further, as some jurisdictions have done, or how long they might seek to impose these rules on travel for those in the region.
