Greetings reggaemuffins and friends!
A happy new year to one and all- here’s hoping that this year will be better to you than the last one.
Well as I ended the old year , I started the new, with food and Thanksgiving!
I ventured out and tried some food that Japanese love which are not or are rarely eaten back home. I was once again taken to the Restaurant called ZEN in Hyogo prefecture. I decided to be brave and dare to go where I have not gone gastronomically in the past 😎

Here’s the first thing to arrive ; what do you think it is?
Oysters! Did you get it? oysters, battered and deep fried, served on a bed of lettuce with a piece of lemon. There was also nice serving of Japanese sauce to go with it.

It’s not something I think I would eat again , the batter was good but the bland taste underneath was not to my liking. Moreover,it was extremely soft , it was similar to eating hot tomatoes without seasonings. If you like it , go for it but I’ll pass next time.
Now on to the next adventure,
It has legs , spews ink and swims in the vast ocean. What is it?
In Japanese it’s called “Ika” in English it’s just squid 🦑! This is a popular food at street stalls and shops especially in the Osaka area.I really dislike the smell of the thing so inspite of my years here - I never tried it. Anyway as adventure would dictate I did.

It came on a hot plate coated in butter and dressed in sauce sauce- beautiful it was not. The butter and soy sauce combined to mask the usually strong smell. I was surprised by the taste , it wasnt horrible . It is however, an acquired taste. After biting into those legs I smelled the street grill aroma but the texture was similar chicken feet so no shock there

True to form I had chicken to offset the shock of the new things.

This was chicken done right , a bit of olive or sesame seed oil, a “tups a salt” placed on a grill and cooked to perfection. The chicken on the skewer was a first. I think I’m falling in love with “Negi” or green onions placed on hot meat dishes. It adds a fabulous smell and taste to any dish.
Finally I had some beef sinew which cooked over a few days , tender to touch and rich in flavor.
