Kota Tua adalah sisa Oud Batavia, pemukiman berdinding Belanda pertama di wilayah Jakarta. Itu adalah kota berdinding di dalam dengan Kastilnya sendiri. Daerah ini menjadi penting selama abad 17-19 ketika didirikan sebagai ibukota de facto Hindia Belanda. Kota berdinding bagian dalam ini kontras dengan kampung (desa), kebun buah, dan sawah di sekitarnya. Dijuluki "The Jewel of Asia" pada abad ke-16 oleh para pelaut Eropa, kawasan ini merupakan pusat perdagangan karena lokasinya yang strategis dalam industri perdagangan rempah-rempah di kepulauan itu.
