TalkingWorldCup #07 : FAIR PLAY SAVED JAPAN

in japan •  7 years ago

Despite defeat against Poland today, Japan still qualify for the knockout phase. Besides having the same points as Senegal, the Samuray Blue scored and recieved the same number of goals as the African team.

In this case, the FIFA rules compare the number of red and yellow cards recieved, which allowed Japan to progress to the next round :

GROUP HMPWDLGFGA+/-PTS
COLOMBIA32015236
JAPAN31114404
SENEGAL31114404
POLAND310225-33

So maybe the fact to avoid recieving one or two cards would change the scenario for Senegal.

Yeah was too bad for Senegal.

Hola @abix

Crazy that we actually had a tie-breaker come down to FIFA "fair play points" for the first time ever. Personally, I'd like to see a different tie-breaker, since this method is completely subjective and up to the interpretation of various referees. Maybe shots on goal, or corners won, or something like that would be better. Anyway, nice article - check out my World Cup coverage @thesportsguy and my recent Uruguay-Portugal recap - https://steemit.com/news/@thesportsguy/ronaldo-portugal-fall-short-in-round-of-16-uruguay-to-quarter-finals
