An elderly woman was rescued alive from her collapsed house 72 hours after a powerful earthquake hit Japan. The old woman is in her 80s.

A video released by the country's state news agency (NHK) shows the old woman being pulled out from under the rubble of her home in the town of Wajima.

On the first day of the new year, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck central Japan on Monday afternoon local time. The epicenter was on the remote Noto Peninsula. At least 87 people have been confirmed dead in the earthquake there. Many people are still feared to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed houses. Suzu and Wajima cities suffered the most damage from the earthquake.

Three days after the earthquake, thousands of people are still without electricity and water. The rescue workers could not reach hundreds of people as the road communication was severed due to the landslides caused by the earthquake.

In a message on Thursday morning, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said about 150 people had been rescued from the rubble after the earthquake. Rescue workers are working day and night. So that the rest can be rescued as soon as possible.
