If you already visited Japan, you should have noticed some differences from the Western culture. I was there years ago to meet my family and I was very surprised with one of these curiosities. Here’s what happened:
I met a cousin who is Brazilian as me, but was living in Japan for more than 15 years. We visited some major cities like Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto and Tokyo.
If you have seen Japanese streets in the movies, you've probably noticed there are no dirt on the streets. But what is really interesting is that there are no garbage baskets. I asked my cousin about it and the answer surprised me: if you produce garbage, you should take care of it.
I live in Brazil and this was a shocking experience for me because we Brazilians are always complaining about public services, including street cleaning. It’s common to point the finger to the other when is convenient for us. The hardest part is to accept that we're part of the problem and the solution. Now I carry my garbage and throw it away in my private bin.
What about you? Are you taking care of your garbage? Or this is not your responsibility?
you need to do more research than this.
any modern country could try to imitate this and fail.
Are you only taking pictures in certain parts of Japan, richer areas, or is there something more primal involved in the culture?

Hi tenhanger! This is not related to richer areas - in fact, the places i visited in the countryside where cleaner! The point here is not the garbage or cities, but the mentality =)

This is a fascinating observation.
You now have me wondering at the entire process.
The 'process' here is that we have skips in the local area that are (over)filled for the daily collection.
