Takayama (高山) is a small town located in the mountainous Gifu Prefecture of Japan. It is close to Matsumoto, which makes it a good place to stop for the night after visiting its well-known castle if you don't want to stay there for the night.
There are plenty of things to do in Takayama and in addition to the Sanmachi Suji historic district and its narrow streets, the Higashiyama Walking Course. It is 3.5km long and takes you from the Higashiyama Temple to Shiroyama Park. While walking past the pretty oak trees, you get to see a lot (really, a lot) of temples, shrines and gravestones. We did it in April 2014 and were blessed with a sunny day; and it had not rained the past days so paths and alleys were dry. We encountered almost nobody, maybe because we started it very early in the day.
A peaceful walk that I would recommend if you are in the area.

@jalayn I loved Takayama. Your photos are great, and bring back good memories of this town. Your text is very informative as well. I posted recently on my trip there, mostly the sketches I did. https://steemit.com/travel/@mrsomebody/sketchtravel-in-japan
