Celia by Bud Powell - Guitar Lesson

Hi friends, this is a great jazz standard full of interesting phrasing and jazz motifs. In this lesson I show you how to play the melody line at tempo and then slow it down. I have also included two more videos showing solos over the changes. In order to start speaking the language of jazz it is best to learn each little phrase separately and memorize the little motifs and then string them together.

Also by playing the jazz phrases in different key centers and starting the phrase on a different string you will learn more about phrasing and be well on your way to speaking the language of jazz. The key to a good jazz solo is being able to grab the closest note when the key center of the change requires the next mode or scale. Also breaking up the motifs with a rest is important.

Some players use fancy scales and play very fast without resting or using spacing, so listen to the legends and try and copy their solos and learn their phrasing and study their motifs. Even if you only learn the melody line there will be a little more jazz vocabulary you will pick up from each jazz standard and soon you will be a proficient jazz player. Enjoy the lesson and all the best ... GuitarLots
