A court ruling in the UK has allowed a cryptocurrency mining company to use an old coal-fired power plant as its primary base to power its operations. The decision was taken by the High Court of England and Wales, which means that Cryptomining Limited can now use an old coal-fired power plant in Yorkshire as the primary source of energy for its operations.
The court's decision came after Cryptomining Limited was found to have violated an earlier order from the Environment Agency, which stated that it could only use renewable energy sources to power the its activities. The order was issued after Cryptomining Limited was fined by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
BEIS fined Cryptomining Limited £500,000 after it was found that it had breached the terms of its license by using fossil fuels for several months in 2018. The BEIS says this amounts to more than £500,000 in tax lost because it uses fossil fuels instead of clean energy sources such as solar or wind farms.
