The gospel of Mark tells that many people followed Jesus and as he was on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, he got into a boat to teach them. And the gospel says that Jesus, to enlighten his followers in the knowledge of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, Jesus did something very simple: "He taught them many things by parables" Mark 4:2.
The Parables and the explanation of their spiritual meaning were a resource widely used by Jesus, the parables often contained an explicit teaching but others had a hidden meaning, that is why Mark wrote: "With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything" Mark 4:33-34.
Parables are fundamentally tales or fantastic stories that alert man about the importance of living ethically and seeking the true good which is the eternal life.
And the parables always have a very direct purpose, highlighting some special characteristic of this Kingdom, like the parable of the seed that grows by itself taught by Mark. This parable is intended to teach the concept of progressivity. Like the seed that grows, the blessed man develops to his potential, which is integrity.
This is how Jesus explained this beautiful parable:
"So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed upon the earth; and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he knoweth not how. The earth beareth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the fruit is ripe, straightway he putteth forth the sickle, because the harvest is come" Mark 4:26-29.
