In order to make his message of salvation known, Jesus put John the Baptist as an example in the Gospel of Luke. Like many prophets of the Old Testament, John the Baptist was conceived through the grace of God for the fulfillment of a spiritual mission; John led a life of poverty baptizing for the repentance of sins. John baptized with water and proclaimed that the Kingdom of Heaven, the dominion or empire of God's perfections was near, John with his preaching explained that the arrival of Jesus was not too far.
And Jesus knew John and because of his righteous life, he set him as an example to follow for those who want to enter the Kingdom of God, because this Kingdom means to live the spiritual gifts inherited from God: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" Matthew 5:48, "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful" Luke 6:36.
With these words, Jesus referred to John, a man filled with the Holy Spirit:
"I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John. But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John" Luke 7:28-30.
And as the Gospel of Luke tells, this Kingdom, this dominion, had followers and enemies, and this is so because the Kingdom is above all a call to those who fear God with their hearts. As Jesus pointed out, the Pharisees and the doctors of the law, due to the hardness of their hearts, could not accept either the message of John or that of Jesus. The Pharisees and the doctors of the law represented the power of oppression in the time of Jesus.
