The virtue of Justice in the new testament is not enough to enter the kingdom of God. Aristotle defines justice as giving and receiving in a proportional way, the problem then is how the proportion is defined. A form of distributive justice has been known since ancient times as the law of Talion, from the time of the code of Hammurabi in Babylon. In practical terms, this law can be confused with rigor, which is not a virtue but a vice (Aristotle).
Jesus in the Gospel of Saint Matthew condemns the law of Talion or law of retaliation: "You have heard that it was said, ´Eye for eye and tooth for tooth´. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.", Matthew 5:38-40.
This teaching of Jesus is also present in Luke 6:29. This is one of the most controversial teachings of Jesus. It is the instruction of a teacher of wisdom or not?, that is the question. Jesus is not telling us that if someone hits us we have to let ourselves be hit more. He is simply telling us that justice sometimes deviates us from the path of mercy (compassion, amiability, benevolence, benedicence). Mercy is a path because it is progressive, we grow living the spiritual gift of mercy: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful", Luke 6:36. When we speak of the spirit we speak of perfections, of divine qualities: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect", Matthew 5:48.
Entering the kingdom of God means accepting a life of mercy and rectitude. Justice is a concept that comes from the greek philosophy, a concept that is related with the soul, not the spirit. This is why Jesus tells us, justice is not enough.
The kingdom of God is an exigency; like the law of talion, justice is not a guarantee of anything.
