You probably know that, apart from regular yellow ewelry gold, there is also white and rose gold. That's not all, however: jewelers also use red and black alloys. But the rarest type is blue gold.
Gold alloys of various colors are developed as a result of consumer demand and the trend for unusual designs. Combining gold with other metals allows manufacturers to satisfy even the most sophisticated tastes. And while silver and copper have been added to gold since antiquity to increase its resistance and wearability, now jewelers also experiment with intermetallic oxide compounds.
The blue alloy contains 46.% of gold, while the rest is indium, which gives the compound its unusual color. Lighter blue alloys of gold with gallium are also used. Compared to pure gold, these mixes are more brittle and are mostly used for soldering pieces of rose gold jewelry during repairs, but you can also find ornaments made of blue gold in the market.
Blue gold jewelry doesn't require any special care, but you need to treat it carefully, since it is easily damaged. Checking the authenticity of such pieces is done in the same way as with any other gold item: they should have a hallmark. In case of doubts, special electronic detectors are used.
