I finished watching Jim Carey's new documentary on Netflix and man it left me feeling all kinds of different emotions. I am astounded at the deep meaning he was conveying throughout the story that was being told. I learned a ton about Andy Kaufman and what he was about during the story. Which, might I say that Andy sure was an incredible guy and to have Jim portray him so well was touching in a way.
Something I feel like engaging in with people is what was said by Jim, "When you create yourself to make it, uh, you're going to have to either let that creation go, and take a chance on being loved or hated for who you really are, or you're going to have to kill who you really are and fall into a grave grasping onto a character that you never were." 43:06 Netflix- Jim and Andy The Great Beyond
That really hit home with me. It also nailed me with a question! IF what he is saying is true, then the decisions I may have been making up till now were purely based on being accepted. Whether that was getting a job I don't want to be at or doing things for my "friends" that I don't really wanna do because it has no relevance to me at all and how I become successful. I do recall in middle school having changed myself to be accepted by everyone after I got bullied. I never did fight my bullies and honestly they ended up respecting me somehow after my first incident. I think the respect was fake because I changed myself to make it through. I continued to change and morph myself however needed to join "the crowds" until college and then I really shifted into who I really wanted to be and not who everyone around me wanted me to be. I lost some awesome people to join these crowds and do whatever the niche did. Does anyone feel the same way here? Is anyone coming out of trying to be the "cool" guy and finding it rough to find yourself?
Another thing Jim said was, "The choices make you, you know. I'm not a big believer in free will either you know. I pick up the tea because i'm thirsty. Is that free will, you know? Or am I thristy? You know, what told me to pick up the tea?" 1:22:32 Netflix- Jim and Andy The Great Beyond
Now this very powerful question is having me bewildered. I have heard similar truths from amazing people like Tony Robbins, Alan Watts, and all the obstacle course racers I follow. Yet the way Jim put this has me thinking again.
How I took this is that Jim is questioning or stating the fact that our basic requirements to survive as human being is not really free will but really an expectation of our human body in order to keep being in this present day here and now. I can see where he is coming from and where that applies on a human body level but I am still left with many questions. What about life decisions? The ones that really shape who you are. My questions are this, what about the choices aside from basic bodily needs? Like achieving something you love doing? Or the choice to fall in love and experience everything that comes with that? Or maybe even to travel the world and experience many different cultures? I can see how that can already be written in the universes matrix of occurrences that may happen in the individuals lifetime but its still a choice you have to make to achieve that result correct? So if there is no way to obtain that goal without actually making it happen yourself, then will it still happen just because its written in the matrix?
See! I am perplexed! I know i'll come to the conclusion at some point but if anyone has anything to say on this topic, please go ahead. Lets engage!
