Look, these aren't just bad managers, they're abusive managers. These are cultish manipulation techniques-- it's not about you, be a team player, we need you, and OMG, "family stuff can wait."
Threatening someone with "discipline" for refusing to work on their day off, and badgering them for it if they hold firm, should get a manager fired.
There's a rash of these conversations coming out in the environment of people being enabled to leave shitty jobs, but it's not like this is a new phenomenon. This is how these jobs have always been, if not worse.
Maybe, just maybe, the problem isn't that workers are lazy and ungrateful, but that their employers are?
