What the Jon Gruden emails (and the response to them) says about our society and culture.

David Koch always used to say that you should never write anything in an email that you would be embarrassed to read out loud in court.

That's good advice.

Jon Gruden likely never heard that advice and, as a result, he's been fired by the Raiders for comments that he made in emails ten years ago.

Do I like anything that Gruden said? No. Will I defend it? No. Will I say that Gruden handled himself well upon the leak? No. Will I say that making a comment which may even be interpreted as racist is a really stupid thing to do when your job is associated with a league that's almost 70% black? Yeah, that's freaking stupid.

That said, I can't support offense archeology or political correctness or the leveraging of past emails against people's jobs.
Gruden has easily made enough money in his life that he'll be fine even if he never works again. I'm not worried about that.

I am worried about what this says about our culture at every level and in both directions.
