30 Day Challenge — Using Joplin instead of Evernote

in joplin •  7 years ago  (edited)

I’m in the process of developing better habits when it comes to writing. I’m trying to add more structure to my writing. Have you ever read something and it resonated with you? This happens a lot with me. I can never recall the person making the profound statement or point that stuck with me. I want to do better. I now will take notes while reading books and listening to audio books.

What to use to capture notes

I read in three ways. I read physical books, e-books, and listen to audio books. I log my reading activity on Goodreads. Feel free to follow me there. I do follow back. I’m always looking for a good book to read. I always welcome recommendations. Here’s my profile if you would like to connect.

For my three ways of consumption of words, I will capture notes using Joplin. What’s Joplin you may ask? It’s an open-source version of Evernote. I’m trying to move to tools that are free. That’s the real motivation for my move. I know people that work at Evernote. They are really smart and passionate about what they do. Their services have a lot to offer to their customers. Unfortunately my needs aren’t that robust.

What sold me on Joplin

While searching for Evernote open-source alternatives, I saw this from Laurent Cozic. Laurent is the creator of Joplin.

I started developing Joplin when Evernote changed its pricing model and because I wanted my 4,000+ notes to be stored in a more open format, free of any proprietary solution.

This was music to my ears. I don’t want to worry about vendor lock-in. I have to deal with this professionally. I don’t want to think about this for personal passion projects.

The Challenge

Thanks for sticking with me this long. I know our attention spans are growing shorter by the day. For me, the challenge is simple. Here are the steps.

  1. Install Joplin
  2. Export notes from Evernote
  3. Import notes to Joplin
  4. Delete Evernote from my computer
  5. Use Joplin for 30 days

If I can get through 30 days of not using Evernote, I think that’s enough time to say I don’t really need Evernote. If I get through the challenge, I’m deleting my Evernote account. Interested in taking the challenge with me?
