Juicing in January ~ Update 1

in juicing •  3 years ago

Hey there!!

Some of you may recall, I’ve decided to go crazy with my juicer for January!

I’m afraid the past week or so has been a little sad, my usual grocery run was much less than usual.

Living on an island, you get quite used to food insecurity. Basically, if the boat doesn’t make it over for a day or two, the shelves are near empty. It happens during storms in winter a fair amount. When it storms nonstop for weeks, the food situation gets really bad.
This is something that rarely happens on the mainland, and even causes widespread panic in some areas.

Here in Newfoundland, we take it all in stride, we just hope there will be another run soon, or that the stores can order what they need by the following week, and keep our pantry well stocked on a regular basis.
And of course we all know our neighbours, so “borrowing a cup of sugar from next door” is definitely something that still happens here too.

I wasn’t able to get any celery or the leafy greens I had ordered last week, but I did get some cabbage, which I juiced along with the organic green and red apples I was happy to see were in still in my grocery order.

Not a bad combo, though it really makes me long for warmer weather and fresh organic produce from the gardens!!

Seems like a lot of the people who are also juicing in January that I follow on social media live in places where they can get year-round fresh produce quite easily. I’d be jealous, but I’m quite happy where I am and wouldn’t trade this place for anything, even for a warmer climate and more abundant food!

I had started a bunch of sprouts, alfalfa and mung bean to be specific. The mung beans were all gone quickly, and I finished off the alfalfa sprouts the other day. So I’m definitely due for a grocery run again now.

I’m trying to get used to eating food in season again, and winter is all about the sprouts!

I’m going to start a tray of broccoli and pea shoots soon, I’ll get them to the size I want, and I may try to use them in the juicer. Not sure how well it will work, but I’m excited to try!

Anyway, hopefully I’ll be able to get the produce I want this time, and I’ll be able to do more interesting combos than just celery/ apple and cabbage/ apple! 😂

Please let me know what veggies and fruit you like juicing best!

Thanks!! 💚
