Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas on 19th of June 1985 to inform the reluctant community and to the press locals that President Abraham Lincoln had freed the slaves 2 years earlier.

Why did it took so long for this news to get to Texas?

According to Juneteenth.com Website some accounts place the delay on a messenger who was killed on his way to Texas, while some says that the news was wantedly withheld.

Despite of the fact that, there has been a 2½-year delay in letting Texas know about the abolition of slavery in the United States, slavery did not end in Texas overnight. Mr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. posted an article on The Root, Mr. Gates in this article said that as soon as New Orleans fell, several slave owners travelled to Texas with their slaves in order to getaway with new regulations enforced by the Union Army in other states.

The slave owners were placed with the responsibility of letting their slaves know about the news, some slave owners delayed in providing information until after the harvest, Mr. Gates said.
