So, I was a projectionist during Jurassic Park's IMAX re-release. Since it was already one of my favorite films before the re-release, I've seen it North of fifty times. I never knew that Laura Dern was only 23 during filming.
You know why I didn't know? I didn't care. I've never asked an actor's age in my twenty years of work. Since I've never done porn, and never will -- and I've never directed an R- rated sex scene, it hasn't been particularly important to check IDs.
We always cast actors based on the age that they look, or can play -- not based on their real age.
Tom Cruise was five years older during the filming of Mission Impossible -- Fallout than Wilfred Brimley was during the filming of Cacoon. Keanu Reeves, Paul Rudd, Nicole Kidman, and Rachel Weisz are all in their fifties, and they still pass for much younger. Laura Dern just happens to be an actor who passes as older.
For the sake of theater, Dern and Neil didn't look that far apart.
Still, I wanna address this whole deal with the puritanical left.
It's perfectly natural for women to date older men. We shouldn't be freaking out about women having certain preferences, especially when those preferences make perfect biological sense.
The biological clocks of men and women don't tick at the same speed. Women tend to mature faster than men. Women can't have children as late in life as men can. Women tend to be attracted to status and talent, and women statistically make more money than men until the age of thirty.
Of course, nobody is obligated to be attracted to anybody, and nobody has to fall into any statistical category. So long as consenting adults of sound mind are making each other happy, we should keep our noses out of their business. That used to be the policy of the left.
Now, I guess it's a strictly libertarian idea.
