Just the way you are
There’s a poem from an unknown author that reads:
You are beautiful just the way you are,
You don’t need to be a superstar.
Don’t think you need to be someone else,
Because you brighten up this world by just being yourself.
Are you truly yourself?
Why is being yourself so damn hard?
We are constantly comparing ourselves to others, trusting and trying to fit into a world that wants you to be so many different things, all at the same time! You consume so many messages from others – society, your community, families that tell you what is acceptable, desirable, achievable that you can’t hear the warning song within you. You try to be all things to all people. To succeed. To measure up. To achieve. Having the most likes on Instagram, the most views on snapchat, rather than having value in who you are
Alan Watts says “waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be”
It’s so uncomfortable to start becoming yourself! When you start standing up for yourself and your life, you’ll get huge amounts of resistance from others.
You might start off by cutting your hair, ends a friendship, embark on a dream that seems crazy to others or breaking up with someone who “seemed perfect”
BUT you will end up learning how to love yourself, truly and deeply – JUST THE WAY YOU ARE!
Our true self is who we really are when we let go of all of the stories, labels and judgements that we have placed upon ourselves. It is who we naturally are without the masks. I firmly believe that being yourself is one of the most powerful people skills to have.
Why is it important to be yourself, you might ask?
- You are happier because you don’t have to pretend
- You are more confident in the choices you make as you make choices that are right for you
- You will find true friends and keep them because you share the same interests
- You can establish your own identity – your passions, what you can do and plan for your life.
Identity is something everyone needs to know about themselves. If we don’t we get lost in the day-to-day cycle of life.
It is a huge drain on your mind, body and soul to frequently pretend to be or feel like you need to be someone else. Or to act like you feel one way when you really feel another.
A wise man once said “Your strength is measured not in fighting or conflict or winning, but in remaining true to that inner voice and those crazy dreams.”
You need to be you!! You were born an original, don’t die a copy”
